Best of 2013 - Memory Book
We immediately liked Memory Book, by Sean Monaghan, because it was a good dieselpunk adventure that felt fresh and interesting, but the high stakes weren't just physical. It was the emotional one that really stood out to us.
Even though there's adventure and action, Memory Book is really a story about loss and regret. The main character is a victim of circumstance, but she's also liable for her own mistakes, and they aren't small. We like stories where the answers aren't easy and the characters have something more than a villain to deal with.
Then, add in the subtle worldbuilding and Memory Book becomes a pretty memorable story.
See what I did there? Eh? Ehhhh?
Okay fine, just go read the story.
