Best of 2014 - Bombardier
We're kicking off the retrospective of the best stories from 2014 with one of the stories that surprised us most. First, a little background: We're universally anti-vampire around here. No reason to go into the why and wherefore, partially because it's probably obvious already. But the bottom line is that we really dislike vampire stories. So imagine our surprise when early in 2014 a tale crossed our inbox and instantly made us break our house rule.
That story was Bombardier, by K. Edwin Fritz.
Fritz did such a fantastic job of giving the story atmosphere and avoiding all the lazy tropes of vampire stories. Instead of yet-another-vampire-story, we got a something that felt fresh and interesting. We were driven to read on, and we enjoyed every minute of it. We won't go too deep into the particulars of the story because we want you to discover the characters and what makes this story different for yourself. Just rest assured that this is one of the first stories to spring to mind when we started compiling our Best of 2014 list, and it's the perfect way to start our month-long journey.
Stay tuned for the rest of our favorites, which will appear every Tuesday and Thursday all month long.
Enjoy, and Happy New Year!
